the great, big, enormous turnups

I had them hanging around for ages……..

Tried to get them on many times………

Threatened to give them to one of her friends……..

And, lo, she put them on and wore them, for a whole day! Hurrah!

You always think that others are going to be as excited about the finished article, as you are, when you make something. You spend a lot of time making it, ironing out little problems and then present it to the person. The person says ‘Ooh nice’ at the time, but then won’t wear them……………and so it goes. I have tried, my husband has tried and she’s just not buying, the whole handmade sock deal.

So, I will try once more and then give them to a child who will wear them!

It’s a mystery

Mystery sock pair

Well, that’s what my lovely husband has been saying every time he’s seen me knitting these socks.

This was really fun and I will definitely knit a pair in stages like this again, it really helped. They’ve been worn and are very toasty. I have to say I’m very impressed with the yarn and am glad I’ve got some more in stash. Hope you had a good Socktober.

Mother’s Day

Blogged under UK Knitting, socks by castoncastoff on Sunday 11 May 2008 at 13:17

Seeing as I’m from the southern hemisphere and I live in the northern hemisphere, I consider myself lucky that I can have two mother’s days in a year! Is that greedy?

Here are the socks I made for my mother for her birthday/mother’s day. The pattern is so easy to memorise and they look fabulous on. Shame my hooves were too large to model them for you. A must-knit pattern for any sock knitters out there.

Express Lane

These socks are the complete antithesis of what’s been happening round here lately. They worked up in a speedy fashion and by only have the motif up the front. I made a mistake on the first sock and blithely carried on knitting, got to the rib and realised I should’ve had two motifs going round the ankle. So, super express they were.

2.5mm bamboo addis and dpns

Now there is a story as to why I used addis and dpns. Well, I got all the way through sock #1 magic loop - brilliant! Loved the technique, so easy and much better for little hands that like to fiddle and practise their ‘knit knit’ with the real thing when I accidentally leave it in reach! So, I don’t even get through the rib on sock #2 and my needle snaps right at the join. As you can imagine I was rather miffed. I have been meaning to contact them directly as the shop I bought them from sadly closed down last summer. Has this happened to any of you?

I’ve been having a good sort through my *yarn chest*, actually our footstool, and wanted to use up this 28g of Botany I had leftover from this cardigan. It’s such a lovely yarn, it wears well and had some great colours. Why, oh why was it discontinued?

We’ve been busy round here - spring cleaning before spring has even sprung, knitting and enjoying cold winter days.

There has been quite a bit of knitting - lots of small projects to satisfy my mind at the moment, while the black cardigan gets the odd row done on it now and then. There are some socks for wellington boots (above), gift knitting for babes about to be welcomed into the world and some stylish knitwear for Dolly. (Well, more stylish than what she came with at any rate!)

I also did some Kool-Aid dyeing yesterday (over dyeing) and plan to do some more this week. It’s great fun but I’m so impatient about the drying process. All in all, trying to make the most of what I’ve got.

Monkey socks

You would think that I’ve not been doing any knitting but we’ve been a bit busy round here, (The sewing machine is staring at me but has been untouched since the middle of June!) but summer has vaguely hit London, so we’re making the most of it. We had alot of fun at the Innocent Village Fete last Saturday. I was gutted that Seth Lakeman was playing on Sunday, not Saturday!

Knit top down with kitchener stitch toes and slip stitch heels for my bestest friend in all the world

I picked the yarn up in Spotlight on a trip home earlier this year. It’s from Turkey and branded for Spotlight 75% wool to 25% polymide. A lot of the colour ways left a lot to be desired but I liked this one and apart from being a bit splitty, it’s not bad. It really softened up after a soak in some Ecover handwash and blocked very well too. It’s not really black and purple - more dark grey/pine green and a subtle purpley/pink. I thought it worked quite well with the pattern and didn’t get much pooling but not sure how it would go with plain knitting.

I reckon there will be lots of yarn snobs out there, who wouldn’t touch it but I think it’s great and believe it will wear well. I’ll let you know.

Lazy days

Blogged under UK Knitting, socks by castoncastoff on Monday 18 September 2006 at 23:08

Well, not so lazy, actually. With lots of visitors and my parents still here from Oz, we’ve been pretty busy of late. Apologies for not posting pics of the Cobweb Crepe Shawl yet….It will happen, just need the right light.

Mum knitting

We did manage to get to the opening day of the Brum Knitting & Stitching show. It was great for my folks to meet some alpaca producers and Mum was bitten by the sock bug. She reminded us all that there are a pair of crazy striped socks complete with toe that she made about 25 years ago in Patons Patonyle that are still going strong even after being machine-washed all that time! The show was ok but I think there will be more interesting exhibitors in London. I did acquire some beautiful Hipknits cashmere lace yarn (also saw Kerrie’s bump but she was teaching at the time), some lace weight hemp from House of Hemp (Mum was also very taken by their stuff), some circs for socks and needle point holders. Nothing too exciting but I feel a few shawls are in order. Perhaps something from Folk Shawls.

I am still working on the Alphabet blanket and got some done on that this weekend, so am most of the way there. It’s great having some other adults around to help out with baby Coco. If I can stay awake tonight to do some more that would really help then it’s off to the Borderline tomorrow night for Ryan’s gig. Can’t wait……….
